Okay, I don't know about you, but I am really, really ready for summer to come to Wisconsin. No more of this wishy washy weather that gives me hope only to give me a snowstorm the next day. Very thankfully, spring break is coming very soon for me, and I'm sure many of you as well. This year, I am going to Virginia Beach with my family for a little over a week. Because my brother and I go to different schools, I actually lucked out this year with two weeks of spring break, as we are traveling when my brother is off of school, rather than myself. Here's a little breakdown of what I use to travel, some things to remember, and little packing tips here and there :). The bad news is, much like Wisconsin, Virginia is deciding to be very varied in temperature. I am praying that it will get warm enough to swim, and if not, I can enjoy the views anyway :). Last year I decided to purchase a great travel backpack, as I plan on doing much of it in the future. After a ton of deliberation on the subject, I decided on the Kelty Redwing 40. It is made specifically for women, has a U zip all around the front of the bag, can be made compact, and is a great size. I am in love with this backpack and all it offers me. I chose the black color so it is a little more unassuming and maybe can fly under the radar in a crowded metro better than a bright blue can, but if you are only using the backpack for hiking, than the Deep Lake color is gorgeous. This backpack is the perfect size because it is allowed on planes as a carryon and you never have to worry about checking, and potentially losing, your luggage before a flight. I cannot wait to road test this on an international vacation, but for me it has held up wonderfully both on air and road trips.
When packing, it is always best to make a list to make sure you a) don't forget anything, and b) don't bring any unnecessary items. Packing light is so hard for me because for some weird reason I always assume that I am somehow going to need 20x the clothing I usually do. I hope I am not the only one with this problem. Cutting down on how much your bringing will make it easier to keep track of your things in the hotel room and will make it easier to get to the clothes you actually want to wear. Digging through 50 pairs of socks to reach your t-shirt will not be fun. I just about a month ago decided to purchase some packing cubes after seeing them vigorously recommended by Travel Fashion Girl, who also has some amazing packing lists, and searched Amazon. I found a set with a small, medium, and large size that had a cute watercolor print, but I haven't gotten a chance to test them out yet (hopefully after spring break I can get a post out to you guys on how well they worked for me). The idea behind them, for me, is that I can organize my clothing, can unpack easily, and I can cut down on space taken in my backpack for things I decide to buy at my destination. I cannot wait to see how well these work! Also, when packing, I always find it helpful to remember to pack the clothing you feel the most comfortable in. You are going to be jetting around, place to place, and will probably been in a lot of pictures. I like to keep things simple and I don't really get very adventures clothes-wise on vacation. Finally: souvenirs. I always like to keep the little things that made my vacation special along with actual bought items. From my Europe vacation, I have a ton of ticket stubs, a tiny palm branch from Barcelona, and more little things to remember all that made my trip so special. My mom gave me the advice too that you don't really want to buy something that you could also buy where you live. In Paris, we scoured for the perfect find, and Nina Kendosa, a little french boutique, answered. While we were a little taken aback by the "openness' of the changing area, the shirts we bought there are unique and adorable, which is something to aim for. Traveling is a great way to learn more about the world around you, and, more importantly, the people in it. People make things extra special beyond what beauty buildings can hold. God didn't spend his time making buildings, but he did make man in his own image. Have a great spring break! Sydney
