I love going to church. I always feel renewed after and I feel like I just get to start over. The sermon series at Elmbrook Church is currently all about Joshua and taking new ground. It's great to listen to a service about renewal when spring is coming and, it just fits that fresh feeling everyone should get. I love listening to sermons about renewal because we always need it. Every morning we have the opportunity for a new day, and every day we have the opportunity to make change and choices for the better.
I know I struggle with this but those first few minutes when you wake up--what do am I choosing to fill them with? I usually fill it up with Instagram, snooze my alarm, or shove my face in a pillow. However, listening to Lysa Terheurst on K-LOVE a couple days ago reminded me that I need to use those precious few moments, before the stress of the day starts, to dig into God and to not let go. I like to use a little daily devotional book right on my nightstand so I can just open, read, and pray. Five minutes. I know too that there is the First Five app from Proverbs 31 ministries that wakes you up with a devotion so you cannot forget, it's great. Renewal, while it comes on the form of everyday mornings, can also be bigger than just a devotion in the a.m. The pastor, Jason Webb, brought up that, in order to get new ground, we have to give up the old ground that holds us hostage. I have got to give God those things that I am desperately possessing right now. Things that seem so important to me are what holds me back from a truer relationship with God, and I need to let go before I put that "idol" in front of God. I'm trying to remember all of this as spring begins, but the reality is that this is something I've got to actively pursue every day. Change isn't easy, and giving up old ground for new ground will hurt a little bit. Trusting God means not trusting yourself to do God's jobs. As spring comes, I encourage you, with me, to start the little things that give up old ground, and to welcome this coming season with a sense of newness. Catch ya later! Sydney
